| Upcoming Cheesemakers Dinner: Mark your calendars! Devotay is launching the first of what we hope will become an annual event – an All-Iowa Cheesemakers Dinner on Tuesday, December 14th. You need to buy tickets in advance, and readers of Table Talk get the first crack at them. More deets are here.
Gift Certificate Bargain: If you’re nice enough to give Devotay Gift Certificates to your favorite foodies, you should get a little gift too.
One Last Plea: We won’t make a habit of such endorsements but this one hits close to home for us. New polling shows Francis Thicke tied in the race for Iowa Secretary of Agriculture going into these final days. If you believe in Devotay’s mission of local, sustainable food then you’d probably support Francis. Hope you’ll consider voting for more sustainable food.

The Other Guys know their wine

In 1895, Samuele Sebastiani was among the thousands of European immigrants to land in America. One of the true success stories of his era is he bought his first vineyard after saving the money he earned after just a few years of hard work in a Sonoma quarry. He sold most of his wine in bulk to other wineries and was able to keep the winery open through prohibition by being designated one of just seven wineries that was permitted to produce for medical and religious reasons.
Two more generations followed, growing Sebastiani into a giant of the jug wine trade. In 2008, the original winery was sold, but that didn’t stop the family business. Samuele’s grandson, Don, and great-grandsons, Don Jr. and August, opened Don Sebastiani & Sons with a little side branding operation called The Other Guys, or TOG Wines. Earlier this year, Don Jr. and his sister, Mia, spun off TOG Wines as a separate entity, and the first vintages of the new company now are on the shelves.

This Month at the Monday Night Wine Tasting Series – Oct. 11, Sangiovese

Some share some wine with us
Early autumn seems just right for a Sangiovese tasting, so this Monday (11 Oct) we’ll set 2 Californians alongside 2 Italians to do a little compare-contrast action. All the usual details of Iowa’s longest-running wine tasting series apply, so call now – 319.354.1001 – to reserve your space for some yummy wine, a tapa or two, and some sparkling conversation. These tastings are perfect for the wine amateur and bona fide sommelier alike. All you need is a love of the grape and the ability to bend your elbow (actually, don’t even need that, we have straws). This month’s wine’s are:
Girasole Sangiovese 2008, Mendacino
Gran Sasso Sangiovese 2008 Montepulciano
Mojo Sangiovese 2008 Marche
Tobin James Sangiovese 2008 Paso Robles
Don’t forget that you can stay afterward for dinner, with or without the group, and get 25% off any bottle on our list.
